...and even a longing
that comes with the Christmas season,
that's deeply felt
even among people
with no religious connection.
I think
great religious symbols
have tremendous power
to symbolize for people
things that they can't quite
 put in words.
Somehow
listening to Christmas carols
while you are at the mall,
can tug at your heart.
You get to thinking
that there must be more
to something than meets the eye,
 there must be something more
going on here
but I can't quite
 put my finger on it.
 I'm still looking
for something about Christmas
that meets my own sense
 of nostalgia or hope.
It could be
that all holidays do that
 at their best.
They aren't just holy days.
They're also
something that grows up
in the human heart
and invites us
out on the streets
or just sitting at home quietly
 with the candles lit
at Christmas Eve.
