More fabric collage

In my previous post

I showed you some of the

beach themed fabric collages

I'm making for gifts.

Here are just a few more I've made,

with different themes.

You can click on each photo to enlarge if you like.

Copyright free photos are found online,

or use your own vintage photos.

This one uses some of my pieces of rusted fabric,

and also a dictionary page for the word

Cowboy.

You can add anything.

Sometimes I add my paper fabric,

pieces of old maps etc.

This one uses a piece of sari ribbon.

I save even the smallest pieces

for projects like this.

I like to mix florals, stripes and solids.

I also alternate often with lights and darks.

Remember balance and design principles,

even for things such as these fragments.

Fragment Fabric Collage

What do you do with lots of pieces of assorted fabrics

that are given to you?

Make fabric collages.

I have been having more fun making these.

Copyright free photos are the focal point.

and I always add a quote.

Vintage buttons and embellishments are used also.

I make them anywhere from 8" by 10" to 16" by 20".

Here are some with a beach theme.

"Don't wait for your ship to come in.

Swim out to it."

"You can comb the sands or lie in the sun,

the choice is yours, as long as it's fun!"

"A real friend is someone who takes a winter vacation

on a sun drenched beach, and does not send a card."

"Live in the sunshine,

Swim the sea,

Drink the wild air."

Each one has raw edges on each fabric layer.

Denim or some similar heavy fabric is used on the back

to stiffen the piece, so it hangs nicely.

It is added last, to cover up all the stitching that was done.

Then I stitch a hanger on the back,

and it's ready.

You can stiffen it further by adding

spray starch to the back.

Makes great gifts.

Daddy's Little Girl

I have been making some fabric collages.

These are just fragments of raw edged vintage fabric,

trim and buttons from long ago.

I also use copyright free vintage photos

and I usually add a quote.

This one is for my niece Bekah,

who is having a little girl

in December.

I think this little girl holding her doll is so sweet.

The quote says...

"I love being a girl,

because I'm daddy's little girl,

and that rocks!"

Moon Tea and fiber arts

Happy tea day!

In celebration of September's full harvest moon

I wanted to share with you a simple how-to

of making moon tea.

You have all heard of 'sun tea',

well there is 'moon tea' as well.

It is said that,

"Just as the sun represents the masculine,

  the full moon will bring

 a feminine (lunar) quality to your tea

 that will help awaken your creativity

 and extract a different healing energy of the herbs."

Directions for making Moon Tea...

Place fresh or dried herbs of your choice

 and water in a jar or glass bowl

and cover with a screen to keep bugs out.

Put it out with the full moon

and leave it while you rest.

Drink upon waking in the morning.

Have a happy tea day everyone

The Fiber Art Society met recently

so today while I am having my moon tea with you,

I thought we could look at photos

of our show and tell.

Meet Laura!

She is a very talented fiber artist,

who dyes fabrics of all kinds.

She does some beautiful felting projects,

and I wanted you to see the hand dyed and felted purse she made.

It is gorgeous!

Wonderful job Laura.

I'm always excited to see her creations,

and she always has many.

Below is Happy, our Fiber Art Society president.

She is holding her unfinished art quilt she is creating

for our next show.

It is a bit hard to tell now,

but it is a bird riding on an elephant.

I know it will be beautiful,

as Happy always creates very unique pieces,

with beading and more.

Below are more pieces that were brought to show and tell.

Janet is entering this one in our World Peace show.

I love this mostly all black piece that Janet created for the show also.

These are gourd pins made by one of our basket makers

in the group. 

Aren't they lovely!

She sells them at shows,

and you would not believe how lightweight they are.

How to hang?  Vertical or horizontal?

That is the question!

Pat put lots of work into this piece!

Don't these curves look hard to do?

Cornelia made this bright and beautiful art quilt.

The leaves are 3-D.

This last photo shows Laura holding up

her nuno felted scarf.

The holes in it make it beautifiul, in my opinion,

and very unique and interesting.

She also hand dyed the wool,

and hand dyed her shirt and tie/scarf she is wearing.

The meeting was wonderful as always.

It is always fun to get together with women

who enjoy the same things as you do.

"Imagine Peace" painted and dyed fabric

For Paint Party Friday

I am sharing

Imagine Peace.

It is hand dyed fabric and also

 painted with oil pastels

and watercolor crayons.

I also used paper fabric, beads

and free motion quilting.

The face was painted on a piece of muslin

with watercolor crayons.

Here it is pinned to my design board.

Below is a close up of the face.

I sewed leaf beads around part of her forehead.

The next picture shows detail at the bottom.

I stenciled the words on with oil pastels.

The little butterfly on the 'A' is just stamped on.

I stenciled/stamped/painted on some flowers here and there,

and some tiny blue birds in the canopy of the tree.

The stars are stenciled and then I used metallic thread on top

to bring them out a bit more.

The tree goddess roots and canopy

form the peace symbol,

as shown in the first picture above.

This fiber art piece will be entered in a show

in September for the Fiber Art Society

that I belong to.

The show is

"Much Made from Small Pieces" A World View.

This piece measures 24 inches by 34 inches.

Tea Day--dragonflies, dolls and dyeing

Happy Tea on Tuesday!

I just finished my 1.5 mile walk with my friend

and before going into the city I wanted to

slow down and take a few moments to have some tea.

My friend Karen brought me some tea bags this morning,

some I had never tried before.

(I love trying new teas!)

This one is STASH premium

double spice chai black tea.

It is delicious!

Full of cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, cloves,

coriander and nutmeg.

Mmmmm good!  Thanks Karen!

This will surely start my day out right!

Here you see a dragonfly....

that I haven't put up yet.

The doll you see here is one I made awhile back.

She is one of my favorites and one I will keep.

The linen, which is something else I like to collect,

if from my Italy trip a few years ago.

When I was in Italy I found table linens that had dragonflies on it.

It was perfect. 

I no longer have a table to fit it, but I throw the tablecloth

over the little sofa in the entry

and then I made pillows from 2 of the napkins.

I am in the process of de-cluttering and rearranging my home.

We have only been here for 2 years

and I'm learning what works and what doesn't.

Getting rid of the things that I don't just absolutely love

has made me feel pretty good actually.

I love books, but have learned to pass on many of them,

and just keep my very best favorites.

I guess purging is good for the soul in a way.

Oh yes, almost forgot,

do you want to see my latest project....

This is a piece of fabric that several of us dyed

over at my friend Shirleys. 

She called me and ask if I wanted to use the whole piece

to create something

for my August Merit show at the art center.

I was thrilled!

My friend Brenda saw a tree near the top of the piece,

so I am going to run with it.

Lots of stitching will go in this piece,

for the tree and the strata layers below.

It is about 3 ft. by 4 ft.

Three Little Art Quilts

These three little art qults are made with fabric paper and fussy cut fabric and paint. Just to show you how easy and inexpensive it is to make a pretty piece.

I get together with several ladies in town to do fabric art and they wanted me to show them what they can do with the fabric paper and the small amount of batik that we have been doing. Well, all of them but one has never done art quilts, only traditional quilts. So, they told me that if they could be shown something to get them started, then they could visualize what to do. That is why I made these pieces. I will give each of the three ladies, who are new to art quilts, a piece of their choice and tell them to finish embellishing it as they wish, and make it a finished piece with a backing etc.

I will show photos of the finished pieces here when they are through working on them.

I think they will have fun with it.

Fabric/Paper African Art Quilt

I wanted to do something out of my fabric paper that I've been making and some of my batik (she's holding scraps of batik) also, so I made this little art quilt. I bought the shells (they are old shells) recently on my New Mexico trip and the seed (her necklace) is an orchid tree seed from my area here in south Texas. I decided to leave the edges of the piece raw (it's the tissue paper in the fabric paper process) to add more character and add to the primitiveness of it. I did some free motion quilting in the background areas. I left the African fabric (which is commercial fabric that I bought) plain, in order not to take away from its beauty and design
