Breadbaking dance

"[Breadbaking is] one of those almost hypnotic businesses,
like a dance from some ancient ceremony.
It leaves you filled with one of the world's sweetest smells...
there is no chiropractic treatment, no Yoga exercise,
no hour of meditation in a music-throbbing chapel,
that will leave you emptier of bad thoughts
than this homely ceremony of making bread."
---M. F. K. Fisher, ‘The Art of Eating’

My breadbaking adventure has taught me a lot.
I haven't made bread from scratch in years,
(I usually just buy artisan bread, or at times
make my own in the bread machine)
so this was fun.
I was not discouraged
even though my first loaf didn't turn out well.
(It was like a ton of bricks,
and very tough.
Not good)

I wasn't sure if it was something I did
(oh no, it couldn't be THAT!... wink)
or maybe it was my homemade starter below,
(No...I'm sure I made that right too)

or maybe it was the recipe I used.
(that's got to be it... of course...teehee)

So I picked out another recipe,
a 'no knead' recipe at that...
and used my homemade sourdough starter as before,
and got busy again.

The second loaf is like heaven!

Just let me know if you want this no-knead recipe.

Now, I'm off to enjoy a slice of my bread...
with butter, and a glass of iced green tea with lemon.

“Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods;
and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.”
---James Beard (1903-1985)

Yes, I want the recipe for the starter and the bread! It looks so yummie, especially on that fabulous little plate.

ooooh yum! butter and honey and a hot cup of tea .... that loaf is not going to be a loaf for long!

funny, because I was just thinking today that I ought to start making my own bread. I buy so much bread for the kids - it has to save some money if you make your own, right? .... now I just need a cow so I won't have to buy 6 gallons of milk a week :)

I do have to agree about the bread making, something so satisfying about it :)
Your gorgeous bread looks just like a lovely loaf of Artisan!
The starter I use is from potatoes--for my sour dough (on my blog), but it was best with the first batch, not sure what went wrong with the rest of it!
happy tea day :)

good bread is like heaven... my daughter makes it often on weekend and holidays and she finds the kneading to the therapeutic... sour dough is my favourite though...perfect with green tea and lemon...x

I made that bread from a starter recipe years ago. I don't bake bread because I don't eat enough to appreciate it. I have a friend who has FOUR bread machines. She tried to give me one, but I politely declined. I have enough junk, I don't need more.

I love the look of your second loaf. I bet, because I'm so late getting here, that bread is all gone, now! Happy end of Tea Tuesday.

so glad I came by for tea but I bet I'm too late for a slice of your gorgeous bread ...

nothing like a warm slice of crusty bread and butter...
makes the whole house smell really good too...
it's been years since I've baked bread...

we have that same glass canister...our son made a "terrarium" out of it :)

Happy day to you Yvonne
