Kiskadee

We are lucky to have many, many kinds of birds
here in South Texas...
....probably close to 400 different species.
My yard is always full of bird song,
and I love it.

With our warm climate,
we have birds year round,
but certain ones come up from Mexico
and South America
only during spring and summer.

Right now we are having
the Kiskadees visit us.
They are a beautiful colorful bird
with a loud and distinct call...
kisk-ka-dee
or weh, weh, weh.

They love my bird bath, of course.
We are in an extreme drought,
so water is always out for them.

One of the Spanish names for the Kiskadee
 is ‘Bienteveo’
which means ‘I see you well’.
One of my friends told me
 the bird is saying
 “Bien – te – FUE”,
which means
 “It went well for you.”

And of course each country has some legend
about what they think the bird is saying.

Here is one sitting in one of my mesquite trees.

I really enjoy seeing and listening to all the birds,
especially the Kiskadee.
It's one way I....

Savor the Day!

Thank you for this - I've never seen a kiskadee before so it was interesting to read about them. Here, right now, we're listening to the crows...raucous, but a sign that spring is coming.

wow - what great captures with your camera! his long and substantial beak looks useful for digging deep into the bark crevices to get insects

We usually just have doves and swallows and chickadees around here but Kuwait is actually a migratory path -- most of the birds that travel through can be found in the desert areas. I did see an unusual one last week when we were walking that my husband said is called a Hud-hud (hoopoe is the proper name). It had a very long bill -- but I only had my little camera so couldn't get a good picture of it. While we were in Sri Lanka, there were so many birds but they wouldn't sit still to have their picture taken. :/ I love bird watching and listening. :) Have a happy day.Tammy
