What draws us to lighthouses?

This is the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse
as it stands today.
I came across this little lighthouse in Port Lavaca, Texas.
There are many lighthouses more beautiful,
as I've seen many...
but none any more important.
Each and every lighthouse saved many lives,
no matter how small or in what location.

Halfmoon Reef LH was moved onto land eventually,
but originally in the 1850's it was surrounded by water
in the Matagorda Bay, off the Texas Gulf coast.
It survived hurricanes, Civil War and more.
The main thing that was different about
this little lighthouse was....
it had a red light.

about Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse,
and many other lighthouses,

What is is about lighthouses?
What draws a person to them?
I think it may be that "they appeal
to our artistic and nostalgic senses",
as Marie Cook once said.
She also said ...
"we are to let our lights so shine".

Savor the Day!

Amazing how it survived out there in the water. It is a lovely little lighthouse. We've visited some in Michigan and of course photographed many. :) Have a great weekend. Tammy

I've only ever visited one lighthouse -- the famous one here in Canada at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. I think they appeal to our sense of the romantic. Who wouldn't want to be a lonely lighthouse keeper saving lives during wild storms?

Thank you and amazing facts here. I am so happy they saved this lighthouse. I never thought of having lighthouses in Texas....but you do need them. Have a wonderful week! Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart

I agree, lighthouses appeal to art and nostalgia, although many are still in operation today. We have a lot in NNj as well.

nostalgia for sure, but the thought that they lived in such isolation is so remarkable...

I think lighthouses are very photogenic ... I love photographing them - especially under bluesy and sunshine - and not much architecture looks good in that kind of lighting. Maybe it's the white paint and odd angles. Your light house is a real beauty!

I love old buildings. If I had my way...we'd live in an old building...like a firehouse or old bakery...I don't know...anything with a rich history. Well not anything...I don't think I'd care to live in a funeral parlor. I did have a friend who lived in an old rural hospital apartment. It had a "feel" to the place that was different.

what a nice clean well looked after lighthouse..most of ours are just left to get weather beaten and are not lived in anymore which is a shame as I love lighthouses..there is an old one about a mile away which I ride my bike to.
